For the first time in history, EA’s latest basketball simulator game will feature the entire major roster of Women’s NBA players in its character list.
According to Cinema Blend, EA Sports’s upcoming title NBA Live 18, set for release this December, will finally feature the sport’s many female athletes as playable character. This is a first for the series as well as a notable achievement for the sporting game genre overall.
The game plans to feature every major team and player in the league complete with 3D facial scanning technology to ensure each model is as photo-accurate as technologically possible.
Unfortunately, these steps forward only advance so far. The WNBA players will not be available in the career mode (a character creation mode allowing you to play your avatar against pro players in a kind of story) and will not be allowed to play men’s NBA players in any game mode. The developer has not released a comment as to why this might be, though they have said future update may remove these restrictions altogether. There’s also mention that a future career mode including female players “hasn’t been ruled out” yet, either.
Many of the top players in the league have already been scanned into the game, trailers and promotional material advertising the likes of Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Kelsey Plum, and many more. Additionally, there are reports that additional players are still being scanned at the EA Sports studio. Whether this indicates more content is being added to the game prior to release or set as DLC throughout the 2018 year is not yet known. There is also a possibility for these players to be added into a future NBA Live title.
A free demo including some of these players will be available to home console owners starting August 11th.
