Bernie Sanders to Elon Musk, “Focus on Earth”

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and one of the most revered innovators recently claimed his requirements for vast wealth to achieve his goals of interplanetary travels. To this statement, Bernie Sanders couldn’t hold his thoughts back and responded, “we need to focus on Earth”.

Sanders also hinted towards Elon stating that he should pay more taxes to combat the obscene inequalities of income. This is not the first time that Sanders expressed his criticism of Elon’s wealth and how he deals with it.

On a lazy Sunday, while we do have our little chores of running errands, Elon tweeted, “I am accumulating resources to help make life multi-planetary & extend the light of consciousness to the stars.”

This tweet received mixed responses from Elon fans around the world. Sanders, not likely to be a fan, responded, “Space travel is an exciting idea, but right now we need to focus on Earth and create a progressive tax system so that children don’t go hungry, people are not homeless and all Americans have healthcare.”

It did not end there. He further tweeted, “the level of inequality in America is obscene and a threat to our democracy.”

Just last week, Elon Musk took the first spot to become the world’s richest person. He combated the Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in the race to attain the title. According to Bloomberg’s Billionaire’s index, Elon’s estimated fortune is around $ 182 billion.

Elon’s affinity towards space, rockets, inter-planetary dreams is not just aspirations. To sustain and promote his space-exploration dreams, he already has a firm named SpaceX. While we only wish to climb the corporate ladder and fund our materialistic dreams, Elon stated last year that he wants to send a million people to Mars by 2050.

He also had stated and displayed extreme confidence that SpaceX’s starship will land on Mars by 2026 and he will also create employment opportunities on Mars. These are not ordinary aspirations.

While these are not ordinary aspirations, Sanders has not been very welcoming of these goals. Elon Musk was on a defensive spree about his wealth when he received criticism from Sanders.

Recently, Sanders had stated, “We are in a moment in American history where two guys – Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos – own more wealth than the bottom 40% of people in this country.” He further added to his statement, “That level of greed and inequality is not only immoral. It is unsustainable.”

In tandem with his comments on the inequality of wealth, Sanders also introduced a proposal last week in the matter. He proposed to hike the taxes paid by corporates, especially the ones that pay top executives at least 50 times more than median workers.

In Musk’s eyes, he is hoarding his wealth for a higher purpose and has great inter-planetary aspirations to be met. Sanders, who has a clear demarcation of good and bad corporate spending, does not yet seem to be very satisfied. Their Twitter spat certainly gets more attention!
