The award-winning comedian and actress Amy Schumer has once again made headlines with her transparency about her health journey and weight loss methods. During her appearance on a recent episode of “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen, Schumer candidly revealed her experience with the FDA-approved diabetes medication, Ozempic and the side effects that led to her discontinuation of its use. Additionally, she openly discussed her decision to undergo liposuction and called out other celebrities for being less forthright about their own weight loss journeys.

Amy Schumer’s Experience with Ozempic

The Hollywood trend of Ozempic, which has the brand names semaglutide and tripeptide — also known as Wegovy and Mounjaro — works by influencing satiety signals in the brain. Schumer revealed her past year’s trial with Ozempic on Cohen’s show, expressing how the medication left her feeling ill and unable to play with her three-year-old son, Gene. “I was one of those people that felt so sick and couldn’t play with my son. I was so skinny, and he’s throwing a ball at me, and [I couldn’t],” Schumer shared. “And you’re like, ‘OK, this isn’t livable for me.’” The common side effects of such medications, as per Dr. Ania Jastreboff, an obesity medicine physician scientist at Yale University, are nausea and diarrhea. These drugs can also cause vomiting or constipation. Following her experience with these side effects, Schumer decided to halt her use of Ozempic. Nevertheless, she confessed to having invested in the medication, anticipating its growing popularity.

Amy Schumer’s Call for Transparency in Celebrity Weight Loss

Known for her unapologetic openness, Schumer didn’t stop at discussing her own experiences. She expressed her dismay at fellow celebrities being less forthcoming about their weight loss journeys, criticizing those who attributed their weight loss merely to smaller portion sizes. “Everyone has been lying, saying, ‘Oh, smaller portions.’ Like, shut the f— up. You are on Ozempic or one of those things, or you got work done. Just stop,” Amy said. “Be real with the people. When I got lipo, I said I got lipo.”

From Liposuction Skeptic to Patient

The “Trainwreck” star’s attitude toward liposuction also underwent a significant change, which she openly discussed during an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s podcast, “Dear Chelsea.” Initially skeptical about the procedure, Schumer’s perspective changed following her C-section and her struggles with endometriosis, leading her to consider liposuction seriously. After having her uterus and appendix removed to alleviate her endometriosis pain, Schumer decided to proceed with the procedure. “I healed well, and I was like, can I get lipo? And I got lipo, and I’m feeling really good,” Schumer told Handler. She expressed her desire to be transparent about her decision, highlighting the importance of honesty when it comes to physical transformations.

Concerns Around Ozempic

While Schumer isn’t the only celebrity who’s used medications like Ozempic for weight loss, the popularity of such drugs raises some concerns. As per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), common side effects of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and headache. More severe complications can include thyroid C-cell tumors, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, acute kidney injury, increased heart rate, and even suicidal behavior or thinking. Furthermore, the use of Ozempic could potentially lead to thyroid tumors, including cancer, changes in vision, and kidney and gallbladder issues.

Ozempic in the Spotlight

Originally prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, Ozempic has recently seen an off-label use surge as a weight loss drug. Similarly, Wegovy and Mounjaro, which are once-weekly semaglutide injections, have been specifically approved for obesity treatment and weight loss. Despite the potential side effects and health concerns, these medications have been embraced by many in the pursuit of weight loss, including numerous celebrities.

Call for Greater Openness and Responsibility

Schumer is one among a number of celebrities who have spoken openly about their use of medications like Ozempic for weight loss. Amy’s candid revelations underscore her commitment to transparency and authenticity, as well as her call for fellow celebrities to be more honest about their own health and weight loss journeys. In doing so, she hopes to contribute to a more genuine conversation about weight loss, body image, and self-care in the public sphere. In an era where physical appearance is scrutinized and often idealized, Schumer’s candidness and willingness to speak openly about her own experiences with weight loss, liposuction, and medication side effects is a refreshing deviation from the norm.
